triumph cable scarf

Posted by SEAGAMES 2009 | 4:46 AM | | 2 comments »

Yesterday I shipped Dylan the Donkey, the Lupin Scarf and the Triumph Cable Scarf to NY. The scarf was a lot of fun to make. The pattern was easy enough to do while watching tv, but also interesting enough to keep me from being bored. I used di.Ve’ Zenith yarn - super soft machine washable Merino wool - which I love, but the yarn was splitty, especially with my pointy options needles.

Right now I’m in the middle of a scarf that was supposed to go out with the above package and a couple of Christmas presents. My recovery literally consists of: hospital, eat, knit, tv and sleep. What am I going to do when i have to go back to work?

Amazon.com Review
If you're in the market for a miter saw, we always recommend considering a compound model. A compound miter saw is one on which the blade both tilts (bevels) and rotates (miters) to make miter cuts, allowing you to make compound-angle cuts essential for installing crown molding. This professional-duty machine tilts 45 degrees left and right, allowing you to make bevel cuts at both ends of a board without having to flip the board piece around. Its oversized aluminum worktable rotates 45 degrees to the left and 52 degrees to the right.

The saw has a built-in laser that clearly highlights cut line for quick, safe, accurate cuts. However, unlike most miter saws, the laser on this Makita model is mounted above the blade, not to the arbor. That means you don’t have to turn on the saw to activate the laser. Another nice feature is that the laser is independently switched, so you can turn it on or off whenever you’d like.

The saw carriage slides on two precision-ground steel rails that are fitted with ball bearing guides. The result is a vibration-free smooth-rolling saw that produces precise, consistent cuts, even at the outer limits of the slide mechanism. By the way, this 49-pound tool can crosscut a 2-by-12 and bevel-cut boards up to 3-5/8 inch thick. The LS1013L has a souped-up 15-amp, 3,700-rpm direct-drive motor that transfers cutting power to the blade much more efficiently than typical belt-driven saws.

One unique feature of the "FL" line of Makita saws is the built-in fluorescent work light. It illuminates the cut line exactly where you want it, and it’s always right at your fingertips. Makita says the bulb will last some 2,000 hours. Take care, though, as the bulb does get quite warm.

This versatile saw can handle a wide range of carpentry jobs from house framing and deck building to cabinetmaking and interior trim work. .-- Joseph Truini

What's in the box: The saw comes with a dust-collection bag, hold-down vise, two extension wings, 70-tooth carbide-tipped saw blade and blade wrench

Laser Circular Saw with Soft Grips

Trying to follow that pencil mark as you cut long stock with a circular saw can be tricky. The mark might blend with the stock if it’s painted, making it difficult to see. And certainly, there’s sawdust to contend with when it comes to keeping an eye on the cut line. Anyone experiencing these troubles will appreciate the laser guide on this 7-1/4-inch circular saw from Black & Decker. The saw’s on-board laser extends a bright, visible line across the work surface, offering a perfectly straight and highly visible cut line that’s easy to follow. The saw is powered by a beefy, 13 amp motor that spins the blade at 5,000 rpm’s, providing plenty of speed and torque for cross cuts and rips through all types of wood. The saw cuts smoothly through material up to 2-3/8 inches (the tool’s capacity at 90 degrees). With an angled cut of 45 degrees, the saw cuts stock up to 1-13/16 inches thick. Bevel adjustments from 0 to 45 offer accurate angled cuts. And, a calibrated depth-adjustment fine-tunes quickly and locks solidly for cuts through materials of varying thicknesses. Best of all, ergonomically designed front- and rear-assist handles with soft grips mean comfort and control on extended jobs and help stabilize the saw for tricky vertical cuts. The purchase is covered by a two-year manufacturer warranty

Bosch 4410L 15-Amp 10-Inch Dual Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw

Technical Details

  • 10-inch dual bevel compound miter saw with laser tracking
  • Wide miter range--52 degrees left and right; 15 amp; 4,800 rpm; 3-horsepower
  • Heavy cast-iron base; carbide-tipped saw blade
  • Includes saw, blade, dust bag, elbow wrench set, flip-over crown stops
  • 22-1/2-inch base and extenders to 37-1/2-inches long; 55 pounds; 1-year warranty
This is what a miter saw ought to be: accurate, sturdy, powerful, versatile, user-friendly and packed full of cool features.

If we had to choose a favorite aspect, it would have to be the handle. It’s vertical. It’s horizontal. And it’s a couple of other things in between. It locks quickly and easily into any of four positions, so both lefties and righties have complete comfort and control.

This saw is beefy -- it weighs in at 55 pounds and it’s got a nice, wide footprint that promises the ultimate stability, and sliding extensions bring your support area to 37-1/4 inches. If you’re in the market for a stand for this saw as well, we like both the Bosch TracRac as well as the DeWalt DW723.

The dual bevel is a great feature, swinging 47 degrees left and 46 degrees right, with positive bevel stops at 31.6 and 33.9 degrees for flawless crown molding cuts. For miter cuts, the blade swings an impressive 52 degrees left and 60 degrees to the right. There’s even a micro-fine adjustment here, letting you override a detent by as much as 2 degrees. Now that’s precision.

We absolutely love the fence on this saw – Bosch calls it a Speed-track sliding fence – because it’s a full 4 inches tall and has a beautifully readable inch-scale on it. It’s perfect for crown molding, handling pieces up to 6 inches wide when angled against the fence.

We’re suddenly rethinking our earlier statement about our favorite feature on this saw; on second thought, it might well be that all the controls – including the bevel lever – are up front. We’re pretty tired of reaching around a saw body to set a bevel, so this is a most welcome upgrade. Adjustments are so much faster and easier, and all the scales are right up front, too.

Capacities are generous, thanks to the slide, with a max cut of a 2-by-12 at a 45-degree bevel and 3-5/8 by 12 inches when the blade is upright.

And yes, this saw has a laser cutting guide, but unless you really want one, we wouldn’t let that sway a decision on this saw one way or the other. It’s a nice feature if you’re likely to use it, but most of us woodworkers prefer to get a visual on exactly where that blade meets the wood.

In all, this is a beauty of a saw, with features you aren’t going to find on other saws in its class. And we still can’t pick our favorite between the handle and the up-front controls. It’s all good. -- Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Routering Robot with Auto Tool Changer

This is a Routering robot we call the RoboRouter. It uses 1hp 18000rpm air motors to spin three tools, a 90degree router bit, a straight router, and a carbide saw blade. The robot also has a rotary table that allows the operator to load new tops and unload finished ones while the robot is operating. This means that the robot is up 100% of the time, as long as the operator can keep up! They cut about 10 different tops on that robot now and probably cut 40 a day (one shift). This robot replaced 3-4 people, 8 hours a day, letting them move those people to less physically demanding jobs.

Slow cutting

Posted by SEAGAMES 2009 | 5:05 PM | | 0 comments »

Slow cutting is a film editing technique which uses shots of long duration. Though it depends on context, it is estimated that any shot longer than about fifteen seconds will seem rather slow to viewers from Western cultures.

A famous example of slow cutting can be found in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971). In a segment that lasts three minutes and fifteen seconds and contains only three shots, the main character (Alex de Large) is followed as he walks the length of a futuristic record store, meets two young ladies, and brings them back to his (parents') house.

See Long take for more information.

Cross-cutting

Posted by SEAGAMES 2009 | 5:03 PM | | 0 comments »

Cross-cutting

is an editing technique used in films to establish continuity. In a cross-cut, the camera will cut away from one action to another action. Because the shots occur one after another, cross-cutting is used to suggest simultaneity of action. However, it can also be used to link significant actions that do not occur simultaneously. For instance, in D.W. Griffith's A Corner in Wheat, the film cross-cuts between the activities of rich businessmen and poor people waiting in line for bread. This creates a sharp dichotomy between the two actions, and encourages the viewer to compare the two shots. Often, this contrast is used for strong emotional effect, and frequently at the climax of a film. The rhythm of, or length of time between, cross-cuts can also set the tone of a scene. Increasing the rapidity between two different actions may add tension to a scene, much in the same manner of using short, declarative sentences in a work of literature.

The backsaw family

Posted by SEAGAMES 2009 | 4:37 PM | 0 comments »

Backsaws include the tenon saw, the dovetail saw, the (United Kingdom) sash saw1 and the gent's saw. Tenon and dovetail saws usually have a pistol grip style handle which may be open or closed at the bottom. The gent's saw has a thin turned handle which is parallel to the blade. Some dovetail saws also have this style of handle.

Different types of backsaw include:

* Mitre saw — often referred to a large backsaw (20-30 inches or 60-90 cm) used either in a wooden mitre box or in a metal frame which allowed cutting mitres of any specified angle. Note that not all mitre saws are backsaws, and the electric mitre saw (or chop saw) has taken its place today.
* Tenon saw, or often just backsaw — a midsized backsaw used to cut tenons or in a mitre box. The saw derives its name from its use in the cutting of tenons for mortise and tenon joinery. Tenon saws are commonly available with rip-filed teeth for rip cutting and cross-cut for cutting across the grain. Teeth are relatively fine, with 13 teeth per inch being a common size.
* Sash saw — name that seems to have been used in the 18th and 19th century for a smaller tenon saw, used in fabricating window sashes. The term is also used currently to refer to a thin, flexible saw used to free sashes that have been painted shut.
* Dovetail saw — a small backsaw used to cut dovetails. Although most dovetail saw teeth are set for cross-cutting, a rip saw tooth pattern is more efficient. These saws will usually have a higher number of teeth per inch (around 15 T.P.I.) with teeth sharpened to favor ripping operations and set to leave a narrow kerf.
* Gent's saw or Gentleman's saw (rare) — a small dovetail saw with a straight turned handle, rather than an open one typical of most saws. The name seems to have arisen from its use by the nineteenth century dilettante who would now be called a hobbyist but it is hard to find a nineteenth century reference to it. For example, in the section on tools in Every Man his own Mechanic (1881) (816pp), tenon, dovetail and sash saws are listed as a group but there is no mention of a gent's saw. It is adapted for use in making joints in very small woodwork such as that in some musical instruments, dolls' furniture or other model-making. Its distinguishing features are its small size and turned handle.
* Razor saw — A very small backsaw having very finely-pitched crosscut teeth, often with no set. The Razor saw is used by hobbyists, notably Model aircraft, Model boat, and Model railroad enthusiasts. Razor saws typically use disposable blades, since their teeth are so small as to be impractical to re-sharpen.
* Dōzuki — a Japanese backsaw, used for centuries by carpenters and cabinetmakers in Japan. Although this saw does not share an ancestry with the other backsaws in this group, the concept is the same. Unlike most western saws, the dozuki cuts on the pull stroke

Backsaw

Posted by SEAGAMES 2009 | 4:33 PM | | 0 comments »

A Backsaw is any of several types of hand saws used in woodworking which have a stiffening rib on the edge opposite the cutting edge, allowing for better control and more precise cutting than with other types of saws. Backsaws are normally used for precise work, such as cutting dovetails, mitres, or tenons in cabinetry and joinery. Because the stiffener is thicker than the blade, the backsaws are limited in the depth to which they can cut. Backsaws usually have relatively closely-spaced teeth, often with little or no set.

The origin of the Western backsaw is unknown, but it dates at least to Roman times. The Japanese Dozuki, itself a type of backsaw, is likely to have a different origin to the Western version however it shares common characteristics.

Mitre box

Posted by SEAGAMES 2009 | 3:25 PM | | 0 comments »

A mitre box (US spelling, "miter box") is a woodworking tool used to guide a hand saw to make precise mitre cuts in a board.

A home made manual miter sawing box.

The most common form of a mitre box is a 3-sided box which is open at the top and the ends. The box is made wide enough to accommodate the width of the boards to be cut. Slots are cut in the walls of the box at the precise angle at which the cut is to be made. These slots provide the guide for the saw to follow. Most commonly the slots in the mitre box are cut at 45 degrees and 90 degrees.

In use, the board to be cut is placed in the box and the point at which the board is to be cut is lined up with the appropriate slot in the mitre box wall. A tenon saw is the most common saw used for this operation. The cut is started by placing the saw blade in the slot and drawing the saw back and forth. The slot guides the cut all the way through so that the result is a cut that is perpendicular to the face or edge of the board (depending upon the desired orientation of the cut) and at the appropriate angle. For precise work, a board cut in a mitre box might then be further adjusted on a shooting board.

In the past, mitre boxes were constructed mostly of wood. Some have had metal guides fitted to help prevent wear on the slots. Today, mitre boxes are also available in other materials such as moulded plastic and cast aluminium.

When carpenters used to make their own mitre boxes it was common to use one for a while and then when the guide cuts got worn they were thrown away and a new one made very quickly out of scrap timber.

The three pieces of timber are nailed together, and the top steadying pieces are fixed with smaller panel pins.

The angles are marked, (any angle, not necessarily 45 deg), and the guide cuts are cut with the same saw that will be used for the rest of the cutting.

There is still a case to be made for making one today. For example if an odd size, say 175mm cornice (crown moulding) is to be fixed, Then a bottom board 175mm wide would make sure that the cornice sits true while the cuts are being made.

The mitre saw combines the features of a mitre box with a tenon saw.

How to Use the Mounting Stand on a Motorized Miter Saw Learn how to use the mounting stand on a Motorized Miter Saw - free video

  • A compound feature allows the angle of the cutting blade to be changed relative to the horizontal plane. This allows the saw to be used for bevel cutting. Most compound features allow the angle to be set between 0° and 50°, while a less-common "double-bevel" allows the angle to be set between -50° and 50°. A saw with this feature is known as a compound miter saw or CMS.
  • A slide allows the cutting blade to be moved several inches along the cutting plane during the cut. This enables the saw to make cuts that are longer than the diameter of the blade. A saw which combines the sliding and compound features is known as a sliding compound miter saw or SCMS.
  • A laser guide provides a precise visual indication of where the cut will be positioned on the workpiece in the current configuration. Some models provide a single reference line for one side of the kerf, while others provide two lines to reflect the total kerf width.Heavy use of the saw may put out the laser guides.
  • A blade guard is a cover for the teeth of the cutting blade. Most modern miter saws have self-retracting blade guards, which automatically retract when the saw is lowered onto a workpiece and re-cover the blade when the saw is raised. It is very dangerous to use the saw if these guards are removed or damaged.
  • A dust bag connects directly to the saw, and helps to collect sawdust away from the workpiece during cutting. Optionally, many manufacturers sell adapters to connect a shop-vac in lieu of a bag to capture more of the dust and simplify disposal.
  • A safety clamp helps to lock a workpiece into position prior to making a cut. This is an especially important feature when cutting smaller workpieces (eight inches or smaller).

Motorized Miter Saw

Posted by SEAGAMES 2009 | 3:00 PM | | 0 comments »

Today, a miter saw (also called a chop saw or drop saw) usually refers to a power tool used to make a quick, accurate crosscut in a workpiece. It is most frequently used to cut wood, although some plastics and light metals can also be cut with the tool. Common uses include framing operations and the cutting of Molding (decorative). Most miter saws are relatively small and portable, with common blade sizes ranging from eight to 12 inches.

The miter saw makes cuts by pulling a spinning circular saw blade down onto a workpiece in a short, controlled motion. The workpiece is typically held against a fence, which provides a precise cutting angle between the blade and the longest workpiece edge. In standard position, this angle is fixed at 90°.

A primary distinguishing feature of the miter saw is the miter index. The miter index allows the angle of the blade to be changed relative to the fence. While most miter saws enable precise one-degree incremental changes to the miter index, many also provide "stops" that allow the miter index to be quickly set to common angles (such as 15°, 30°, or 45°).

A miter saw used to refer either to a large unpowered backsaw or metal frame saw with replaceable blades suspended on rollers in a metal guide that allowed making accurate crosscuts and miter cuts. These types of miter saws are still sold, the Nobex brand being notable. Today, they are generally used in picture framing but have largely been displaced by the power tool in carpentry and joinery operations.
